Artist Statement

I create to recover from the disease of addiction. Today in recovery - I marvel at the journey of a dragonfly during a walk outside. When the dogs are beside me, we stop to take pictures of flowers with bright colors and sunny dispositions and pick up rusty treasures discarded on the street. Shopping yard sales and antique stores yields vintage surprises that capture my imagination about past generations, their challenges and accomplishments.

I weave these found objects into inspirational messages of hope. Creating helps me to process life, heal from trauma, quiet my mind, and celebrate successes.

Yumi Hogan, recovery art studio, reduce addiction stigma, clean and sober

Robin M. Gilliam at the Behavior Health Awareness Art Show-4/24/17 hosted by Maryland’s First Lady, Mrs. Yumi Hogan.

MISSION

Recovery Art Studio sponsors the Recovery Art Movement. We educate, encourage, and empower Recovery Art Warriors© (RAW©) to create their dreams and reclaim their light through the healing power of art. We are a social media recovery influencer, breaking the stigma about addiction & mental illness, and inspiring hope.

RAWs are recovering from trauma, including #MeToo, & addictions (all types). RAWs are on a mission of self-love, self-caring, and self-construction. We bravely weed out the darkness of trauma to help reclaim our light and grow our beautiful gardens through creative expression and the healing power of art. All genders are welcome. RAWs need NOT have prior artistic experience.

Products and Services provided are not medical advice.

BIOGRAPHY

Robin began her recovery journey on February 6, 1991 after escaping a violent marriage that ended in rape & sodomy, and surviving a crack cocaine overdose. Meet Claire Sebastian - the first Recovery Art Warrior - in Gift of Desperation.

Robin is the Founder and Director of Recovery Art Studio. Robin’s work can be found in collections that include Ashley Addiction Treatment.

She has a B.A. in fine arts and psychology from Goucher College, Towson, MD, 1984.
